Biotin and Thyroid Blood Tests: Can Hair Supplements Give Wrong TSH Results?
By Dr. Moxit Shah, DM Endocrinology | Vishuddha Diabetes, Thyroid, Weight Loss Clinic, Ahmedabad
An unexpected thyroid report can be worrying—especially if you feel well and your previous results were normal. This guide explains what the results or treatment instructions mean and when medical review is appropriate.
Why biotin matters in thyroid testing
Biotin (vitamin B7) is commonly included in hair, skin and nail supplements. At sufficiently high doses, it can interfere with some laboratory immunoassays used to measure thyroid hormones. This is an analytical problem—not necessarily a real change in thyroid function.
What happens to TSH, FT4 and FT3?
In susceptible biotin–streptavidin immunoassays, biotin may cause a falsely low TSH result in sandwich assays and falsely high FT4 or FT3 in some competitive assays. This can mimic biochemical hyperthyroidism. Not all assay platforms are affected in the same way.
How much biotin causes interference?
Risk depends on the dose, timing of the last dose, kidney function and the exact test platform. Typical dietary biotin amounts are not usually the problem; high-dose supplements can be. Even products labelled as beauty supplements may contain doses far above daily nutritional needs.
Should you stop biotin before a thyroid test?
Tell the laboratory and prescribing clinician about all supplements. Many professional resources advise withholding high-dose biotin for at least 48–72 hours before susceptible thyroid testing, but some doses and tests require longer. Follow the laboratory’s specific instructions; do not stop medically prescribed high-dose biotin without speaking to your clinician.
What if your results suggest hyperthyroidism but you feel normal?
A low TSH with high FT4 or FT3 should be interpreted with symptoms, examination, previous results and medicines. If the pattern is unexpected, the clinician may repeat testing after an appropriate biotin washout or use an alternative assay method before starting treatment.
Other reasons thyroid reports can disagree
Recent illness, thyroid medicines, pregnancy, assay antibodies and certain medicines can change thyroid results or their interpretation. Biotin is one possibility, not the only one. See our thyroid testing overview.
Do hair supplements treat thyroid-related hair loss?
Hair shedding has many causes, including iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, stress and nutritional factors. Taking biotin does not reliably correct hair loss unless there is a genuine deficiency. Discuss symptoms and testing rather than assuming a supplement is necessary.
When to consult a thyroid specialist in Ahmedabad
If your thyroid results changed suddenly, do not match your symptoms, or you take hair-growth supplements, bring the supplement packaging to your appointment. Your doctor can determine whether to repeat tests and whether treatment is actually needed. Read also how to take levothyroxine correctly.
Frequently asked questions
Can biotin make TSH look low?
Yes, on some laboratory assay platforms. The effect depends on the dose, timing and assay used.
Is every thyroid blood test affected?
No. Different laboratory methods have different susceptibility to biotin interference.
