Orforglipron (Foundayo): New Oral GLP-1 Weight Loss Tablet, Results, Side Effects and India Launch
By Dr. Moxit Shah, DM Endocrinology | Vishuddha Endocrine Clinic, Ahmedabad
Orforglipron, sold as Foundayo in the United States, is a new once-daily oral GLP-1 receptor agonist from Eli Lilly for medical Weight Loss. Unlike oral semaglutide, it can be taken without special food or water restrictions. This article explains its benefits, clinical results, side effects, comparison with Wegovy and Rybelsus, and India availability as of October 2026.
What Is Orforglipron (Foundayo)?
Orforglipron is a non-peptide, small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist. By acting on appetite and satiety pathways, it helps people feel full sooner and eat less. The US FDA approved Foundayo on April 1, 2026 for long-term weight management in eligible adults, alongside reduced-calorie nutrition and physical activity. It is not insulin, and it is not an over-the-counter slimming pill.
How Much Weight Loss Does Orforglipron Produce?
In the Phase 3 ATTAIN-1 study, the highest studied dose produced approximately 12.4% mean Weight Loss at 72 weeks in the efficacy estimand among adults without Type 2 Diabetes. In the treatment-regimen analysis, which accounts for treatment discontinuation and other intercurrent events, mean Weight Loss was approximately 11.2%. These figures describe group averages, not guaranteed individual results. People with Type 2 Diabetes also lost clinically meaningful weight in ATTAIN-2.

Is Orforglipron Better Than Semaglutide?
Orforglipron’s clearest practical advantage is easier tablet administration. In the ACHIEVE-3 Type 2 Diabetes trial, the studied orforglipron regimen achieved greater HbA1c and weight reductions than oral semaglutide 14 mg. However, that trial does not establish superiority over the higher-dose Wegovy weight-management pill or injectable semaglutide. Direct comparisons must consider doses, populations, follow-up and estimands.
How Is Foundayo Taken?
Foundayo is taken once daily. Unlike oral semaglutide, it does not require fasting or a special volume of water. In the US, the starting dose is 0.8 mg daily with gradual increases, generally at intervals of at least 30 days, depending on tolerability and treatment response. Do not copy the dose from an investigational trial: approved commercial tablet strengths differ from some older trial formulations. Follow the locally approved prescribing information when available.
Side Effects and Safety Precautions
- Common adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal discomfort, especially during dose escalation.
- Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration and kidney injury.
- Seek urgent care for severe persistent abdominal pain or possible gallbladder symptoms.
- Risk of low blood sugar may increase when used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
- Foundayo carries a US boxed warning related to thyroid C-cell tumours and is contraindicated in people with personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2.
- Pregnancy and pregnancy planning require specific medical counselling. It should not be used as a cosmetic or unsupervised Weight Loss medicine.
Is Orforglipron Available in India? What Will It Cost?
As of October 2026, orforglipron has US approval and is marketed there as Foundayo. Its India launch has been reported as a possibility in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory decisions and commercial plans. No verified Indian retail price or launch date should be assumed yet. US prices and insurance offers cannot be converted into an Indian MRP. Avoid online sellers claiming to supply an India-approved product without verifiable authorization.
Who Might Benefit From an Oral GLP-1 Weight Loss Tablet?
Potential candidates include eligible adults who need evidence-based medical Weight Loss treatment and prefer a daily tablet over injections. Selection depends on BMI, associated conditions, existing medicines, contraindications, affordability and ability to continue nutrition, activity and follow-up. A daily pill is not automatically better for every patient than a weekly injection.
